Green & Social Hub: Creativity, Education, and Sustainability to Tackle Social Inequality
Bringing together creativity, education, and sustainability to fight social inequalities: this is the goal of the European project “Green & Social Hub”, in which the Municipality of Avezzano is actively involved alongside ALI – Autonomie Locali Italiane (lead partner), Leganet, Studio COME, ACR+, Federconsumatori Lazio, and the municipalities of Bassiano (LT) and Crispiano (TA).
An initiative that places schools and younger generations at its core, engaging students in an original and inclusive educational journey that will culminate in the 2025 Environmental Festival, the city’s flagship green event.
Objective: A Just Green Transition That Leaves No One Behind
The G&S Hub project was created to address the many dimensions of modern poverty — economic, energy-related, social, and educational — in an integrated way, ensuring that the green and digital transition is truly fair and inclusive.
How? By starting from local communities and directly involving the most vulnerable groups: families in difficulty, migrants, the elderly, and most importantly, young students.
Middle School Workshops: Comics as a Tool for Awareness
At the heart of the activities in Avezzano are creative workshops designed for lower secondary schools across the city. These workshops will consist of 10 sessions of 90 minutes each, taking place once a week during school hours.
The main focus of the program will be the creation of a comic story centered on the theme of sustainable energy consumption. Students will not only learn key concepts related to the green transition but will also explore artistic fundamentals such as:
- Anatomy and proportions
- Perspective and composition
- Character design
- Storytelling techniques
While the students may not complete a full comic on their own, by the end of the program, they will have developed characters and outlined a narrative, ready to be refined and finalized by professional artists from the Comic Art School, following the students’ guidance.
A Project That Comes to Life… and Tells Its Story in an Exhibition
The final product will be unveiled at “AMBIENTIAMOCI”, the 2025 Environmental Festival organized by the Municipality of Avezzano and scheduled for May.
During the festival:
- The completed comic book — a collaboration between students and professional illustrators — will be presented to the public.
- An exhibition will showcase the creative journey, featuring sketches, drafts, photos, and preparatory drawings.
- A prize ceremony will be organized in collaboration with the Department of Environment.
A Community-Wide Opportunity for Growth
The G&S Hub project is more than an educational activity — it’s a platform for active citizenship. Through creativity and collaboration, students become ambassadors of change, reflecting on their own future and the future of the planet.
An educational investment that starts in schools and grows into awareness, skills, and community engagement for a more sustainable world.
